✦ Where does the word “angel” come from?
The word ANGEL comes from the Greek word ángelos, meaning messenger. The earliest depictions of angels existed in Babylonia and Ancient Egypt.
Participation in the creation of the world ⌄
According to Augustine of Hippo's theology, interpreting the biblical account of creation, Angels were created on the first day. God created heaven, earth and light. Heaven and light symbolise the spiritual, rational world. Bringing light into existence was, in fact, bringing spiritual beings into existence.
As spiritual, rational beings, Angels do not merely possess spiritual light: they are light. Being light, they turn towards the Creator at the very moment of their creation. Their role in the continuing work of creation arises from their nature as spiritual light.
They give form to bodies and illuminate what is dark. Angels are a model for earthly creatures.
